About Glendale Beef Stud
Glendale Beef Stud was developed in 1990 and was then registered in 1992 by Viv and Muriel Vinicombe and Michele Fleming, currently probably the oldest standing Gelbvieh Stud in Australia.
Glendale Beef Stud is located at Serpentine W.A. which is 70 km south of Perth. We have 300 acres of beautiful pastures on Henderson Road 10 km south of Serpentine. We run about 70 head of cattle included in this we have our Gelbvieh and Red Angus, and a few Commercial cows, which consists of Gelbvieh, Red Angus, Murray Grey and Angus females.
At this time, we were looking for a breed to increase muscle and reduce fat in our young saleable animals and keeping our quiet natured herd together by selecting the right animals to breed on with. Another huge stand out for our choice of breed was the excellent maternal traits and milking ability in the females, while increasing meat yield of both steers and heifers with good fat cover and growth for meat or feeder markets. Gelbvieh would be one of the best breeds to achieve this result.
We were one of the first studs to implement Breedplan in our early years with stud cattle and still continue today with C-Gen EPD’s and 100 K genetic testing. All females and bulls are scanned for Fat P8 and Rib and EMA measured at around 15 to 18 months.
Our cattle are all raised on improved pastures and home grown meadow hay. Calves are not creep fed at all while on their dams. Bulls do get a small grain ration when the dry feed gets low and our weaner bulls are introduced to grain after weaning and through their first summer.
Our beginning was restricted by the lack of genetic availability. With opportunities arising, small purchases made throughout our journey and keeping true to our values as stud breeders, we are very proud of our history and its achievements over the years. We are a boutique stud, with a very select herd that has recently sourced several outcross genetics in the past 7 yrs.
Glendale Taurus Star T4
Some of the early genetics Glendale Beef still has lines connecting back to are Double Bar Robin and Double Bar Sarah. Robin bred our first Supreme Champion Junior Bull at the Perth Royal Show in 1999, Glendale Taurus Star. Taurus was also announced as Champion Bull Calf earlier that year at The Gelbvieh World Congress that was held at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. Robin was by Sherman Tank, out of Bells Hill Rose and Taurus was by Gold Star 4w.
Sarah was by Polled Hockeye out of Bells Hill Rose. Sarah bred to LAR Mr Sensation produced our great cow line Glendale Unicorn, which we called Bella. Bella collected several Champion Ribbons in her show career and bred extremely well for 15 to 16 years of age. We have several of her daughters, grand and great granddaughters still producing well in our herd to this day.
In 2005 we had the opportunity of expanding our herds genetics with the dispersal sale of Bandeeka Gelbvieh Stud. Some of the females purchased were, Beauchamp Molly Q, Beauchamp Kimberley, Bandeeka A-Florrie and Bandeeka Z-Sarsha.
We purchased Molly Q with a heifer calf at foot, Bandeeka Alice. Alice was the dam of our stud sire Glendale Edward, a very powerful, lengthy bull sired by Ebony Lodge Sorento who has left his stamp on our herd.
Kimberley was bred to JRI Extra Exposure which produced our Glendale Ashley line. Ashley was the dam of Glendale Navigator whom we used in our herd for a few years, leaving behind some great females for us to breed on with and bulls that have been sold and put out to work around the country.
A-Florrie, by Ebony Lodge Freehold out of a cow by Heaton Park Leon produced a few champions in our herd. The first accolade being the National Champion Carcase steer at Beef 2009 in Rockhampton, in the pasture fed class 180kg – 260kg. The steer was sired by Bandeeka Yankee (another stand out herd sire we have had here). We had 3 steers entered as a group in this class which we were also fortunate enough to take home the win. This was a huge achievement, something we still reflect on to this day.
A-Florrie was then bred to Bandeeka Yankee once again and from this mating we produced Glendale General who would then go on to have a very successful show career. So, the second accolade taking place in 2013, was when General was awarded the All Breeds Senior Champion Bull at the Perth Royal Show. This cow family is still thriving and producing great animals here at Glendale today.
We had General collected and has been used selectively throughout our herd. Z Sarsha was bred to General which produced Glendale Jeanie L47. Jeanie was AI’d to VV Zake producing Glendale Platinum P5 which we used in stud and has left some outstanding progeny behind.
Glendale Beef & Canadian Gelbvieh breeders
Since making connections with some Gelbvieh breeders in Canada we have had the opportunity to import some new genetics into our herd over recent years, which we have thoroughly enjoyed seeing the progeny come through.
We have imported 4 groups of Embryos of which 3 have progeny on the ground now. The first group of embryo’s we imported 5 years ago were from Stonegate Farm, Darrell & Leila Hickman. From those embryo’s we still have both male and female breeding on farm today, Glendale Miss Maple M5 and Glendale Monumental M3. These embyro’s were sired by JRI Top Recruit out of STON Miss Julie 13U.
The second group of embyro’s came from Twinview Gelbvieh Stud, Aaron Birch and Joe Barnett. The Embryos are from the Gayle cow family, SA Birch’s Gayle 32N by DRJ Full Exposure. We have two females Glendale Gayle Q4 and Q5 and our bull Glendale Quarterback Q11, who are all breeding on really well.
We also had the opportunity of purchasing some semen, the first lot from VV Zake 114Z (Stonegate Farm) who was National Champion Bull at Farmfair in 2013 and again in 2014 and Agribition in 2013. This bull has produced some great deep bodied progeny for us.
The second lot we purchased from Royal Western Gelbvieh, RWG Exact Combination 7409. We have imported this bull in through semen and also later purchased embryo’s by him. The embryo’s are out of cow from Stonegate Farm, VV Wind Zong 45Z.
